We believe cybersecurity to be a business enabler, including Identity and access management which is critical to modern cybersecurity practices, especially for remote user access and securing hybrid IT environments. The IAM architect we are looking for is a mid- senior level technical practitioner and manager who can play a central role in the organization’s cybersecurity strategy, while maintaining high user productivity, customer engagement, and operational efficiency. Key priorities you should have experience in should be setting the organization’s IAM strategic direction, executing projects against the IAM roadmap, and optimizing IAM services.

Profile of an IAM architect

As a Mid-senior level technical practitioner and manager, you are responsible for leading a team of security engineers that operate and manage platforms and applications critical to the IAM program. Typical IAM architect credentials include a master’s degree in computer science, management of information systems, or related field of study, plus five to 10 years of IAM functional experience. As an IAM architect you should have a track record of leading cross-functional efforts embedding IAM best practices across a distributed organization such as:

  • Setting the strategic direction for IAM across the organization.
  • Executing projects against the IAM roadmap.
  • Optimizing the ongoing operations of IAM services.

Responsibilities

Key business responsibilities for you as IAM architect include:

  • Shaping the IAM program

Structure a governance model for the people, processes, and technology aligned to the principle of least privilege access. Administer the onboarding and offboarding of users, applications, and systems with automated and auditable processes. Enforce strong authentication and authorization flows for employees, partners, customers, privileged users (human and non-human). Create a culture and set of processes for optimizing IAM operational efficiency and continuously improving security posture.

  • Overseeing the implementation of IAM technologies

This includes being a decisionmaker in vendor selection, taking point technology project management, and maintaining strong vendor relationships. It also includes automating IT processes such as account creation and off-boarding. As well as assisting with configuration of and management of baseline and operational monitoring for core technology solutions and integrated partners.

  • Developing standards and policies for IAM programs

Ensuring that processes and technology implementations will pass internal and external audits by meeting compliance requirements for regulations such as SOX, HIPAA, GDPR, PCI-DSS. Assisting in creating process and workflows to facilitate reporting, monitoring, and compliance.

  • Developing and monitoring a set of key performance indicators (KPIs)

Creating the KPIs to measure health of the program and optimize ongoing operations through process improvement, configuration changes, technology upgrades, and proper staff alignment to responsibilities.

  • Engaging in cross-functional project alignment

Working with technology and business owners across the organization to fully onboard new applications for single sign-on, authentication and authorization, entitlements management, and user lifecycle management.

Requirements

As IAM architect you should have the following work experience, educational credentials, and proven skills:

  • Professional and educational credentials

At least five years of experience playing a key role in building IAM programs, with both technical expertise and cross-functional project management skills. Candidates typically have a master’s degree in computer science, information systems, or related field.

  • Management skills

An ideal IAM architect should possess effective project management skills, people management experience, and good verbal and written communication skills. The IAM architect should be motivated to take initiative and have the people skills to collaborate with other business and technology teams that often have different reporting structures and priorities.

  • Technical skills

The IAM architect should possess strong knowledge in the following technologies: IDaaS and single sign-on (SaaS and on-premises), directory services (Active Directory, LDAP, cloud-based directories), user authentication (MFA, passwordless), identity management and governance, privileged identity management, and some understanding of PKI and certificates/key management. The individual should have a solid understanding of IAM related protocols and standards: SAML, OAuth/OIDC, WS-Fed, SCIM, FIDO, TLS/SSL, RDP, RADIUS, Kerberos. Experience with IAM for MacOS, Linux, and Windows platforms. Competency in APIs (Rest, Graph) and JavaScript/JSON is preferred.
